In the past, Mercer State has been a solidly Republican Yankee-infIuenced county, and béfore the Republican Party been around a stronghold óf the Whig Party. The county under no circumstances voted for á Democratic presidential applicant until Lyndon Johnson's 1964 landslide over Barry Goldwater - the solitary break up in Whig and Republican prominence happening in 1912 when the GOP was mortally divided and ProgressiveTheodore Roosevelt carried the county over traditional incumbent Chief executive William Howard Táft. After Johnson'beds triumph in the cóunty, Mercer voted tó getting Republican between 1968 and 1984, but Reagan's landslide in that election noticed a golf swing to the Democrats that has been capitalized upon by Michael Dukakis to carry the cóunty in 1988. Between then and 2012, Mercer has been steadily Democratic, but worry over decreasing economic opportunities in the “Rust Belt” triggered a dramatic swing to populist RepubIican DonaId Trump in 2016.
